Happy Friday 10th January 2025! Today marks the anniversary of a truly significant milestone—on this day in 1946, the first meeting of the United Nations General Assembly was held here in London, UK. Imagine it: representatives from 51 nations gathering in the aftermath of a devastating world war to lay the groundwork for international peace, unity, and justice. As Brits, we feel a little extra pride knowing that this monumental event began on home soil.
The UN’s mission—to promote peace, cooperation, and fairness across nations—is a deeply noble one, but let’s be honest: it’s also one that’s complex and messy at times. After all, can imperfect humans ever truly bring about perfect justice? That’s where we, as Christians, take a step back and reflect on the source of true justice—the heart of God.
Micah 6:8 holds a challenge and an invitation for every believer: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
God spells it out for us with beautiful simplicity: His ways are rooted in justice, mercy, and humility. This verse isn’t just a feel-good call to action—it’s a blueprint for life in a world prone to division and imbalance. It’s also a reminder that even while governments and institutions wrestle with fairness and global unity, God has given each of us an individual responsibility to partner in His vision of justice.
So how does this translate to our day-to-day lives? Well, here are some real-life examples:
- Act Justly: You might not be at a UN assembly debating global treaties, but you can actively pursue fairness in your own circle. Consider standing up for someone being mistreated or overlooked. Or maybe it’s time to have an honest, kind conversation where wrongs need to be made right.
- Love Mercy: “Yeah, but they don’t deserve my kindness…” Sound familiar? Loving mercy means going out of your way to forgive, be kind, and give people far more grace than they’ve earned. A tough ask, sometimes, isn’t it? Yet this is how Christ treats us every day.
- Walk Humbly with God: Humility isn’t about thinking less of yourself; it’s about thinking of yourself less. When we quiet our own ambitions or opinions long enough to tune in to God’s voice, it transforms the way we approach everything—including justice and mercy.
Reflection Questions
- Is there an area of your life where you need to pursue justice, even if it’s on a small, personal scale?
- Who in your life needs a bit of mercy today? Is there someone God is nudging you to forgive or show kindness to?
- How can you walk humbly with God this weekend? Perhaps start by spending some quiet time with Him, asking for His direction.
A Moment to Reflect with an Encouraging Action
Take a moment today to pray for justice and peace across the world. Let’s also pray for our leaders—both globally and locally—that they, too, will seek God’s wisdom and walk humbly as they make decisions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the ultimate source of justice, mercy, and love. Help me to act justly in all areas of my life, to show mercy even when it’s hard, and to walk humbly before You. I pray for our world today—for leaders, governments, and institutions, that they would seek Your wisdom as they work for peace and unity. Thank You, Lord, for choosing to involve us in Your grand mission of healing the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let God’s Word and love guide your steps today, and may you carry His justice, mercy, and humility wherever you go!
