Unlocking God’s Wisdom: Lessons from St. Raymond of Penyafort

Today, Tuesday 7th January 2025, we remember St. Raymond of Penyafort, a 13th-century Dominican friar often regarded as the patron saint of canon lawyers (that’s church law for us non-barristers) and confessor to kings. While his title might sound intimidating, St. Raymond’s life stands as a testimony of humility, perseverance, and using God-given wisdom to build His Kingdom.

Not everyone may feel connected to church law, but we all understand the need for wisdom when navigating life’s complex choices. St. Raymond dedicated his incredible intellect and heart to service—not lording his knowledge over others but using it to encourage and uplift those around him, guiding people towards Christ.

As Christians in modern-day UK, we often face situations where we’re called to speak truth with love, reconcile differences, or stand firm on biblical truths in a culture that’s constantly shifting. What St. Raymond teaches us is that wisdom paired with humility can be a powerful witness for Christ.

Reflection Verse

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

God isn’t stingy with wisdom! In fact, it’s one of the gifts He uniquely promises to give when we ask. So, whether it’s figuring out how to teach your kids to love Jesus despite TikTok trends, navigating work ethics that conflict with your faith, or finding the right words to share the gospel with a neighbour, God is ready and waiting to offer His insight.

Reflection Question

  • Where in your life today could you use God’s wisdom to guide your choices or actions? Stop and ask Him, right now.

Encouraging Action

Take five minutes today to lay your toughest decision—or area of struggle—before God. Ask Him for wisdom, and write down any impressions, scriptures, or thoughts that come to mind. Then act accordingly, trusting Him to guide your steps.

A Moment to Reflect

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when life feels like a maze, isn’t it? But just as St. Raymond used his skills to serve others, we can trust that when we ask, God equips us with the wisdom needed not just for ourselves but to bless those around us and point them to Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the example of St. Raymond of Penyafort, who used his gifts to serve You and those around him. Teach us to come to You daily, asking for wisdom and leaning into Your understanding rather than our own. Help us to be faithful witnesses in our world today, living lives that bring glory to Your name. Fill us with humility, boldness, and grace as we walk in the paths You’ve laid before us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
