It’s Sunday 5th January 2025, and today we celebrate Epiphany Sunday—a day that reminds us God’s light shines for every nation, tribe, and tongue. It’s a moment to reflect on the visit of the Magi, Gentiles led by a star to worship the newborn King (Matthew 2:1-12). Imagine that moment: mysterious visitors arriving in Bethlehem, bearing extravagant gifts, and bowing before the Christ child—who, at the time, was perhaps toddling about or giggling in His mother’s arms. Talk about a divine surprise!
Epiphany stems from a Greek word meaning “revelation” or “manifestation.” The Magi’s journey represents how Jesus isn’t just Israel’s Messiah, but the Saviour of the world. This is a big deal. The prophetic words of Isaiah 60:1-3 burst into reality: “Arise, shine, for your light has come… Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” These wise men travelled far, maybe even for months, determined to meet the one true King. Their perseverance underlines something crucial: God’s light reaches everyone, even those who might feel a bit far off.
Let’s pause a moment. When you think about the Magi, what stars are guiding you in your life? What priorities or passions drive your journey? The Magi remind us to stay focused on Jesus, even when the path is long or unexpected detours arise. Their story also challenges us to reflect God’s light in our spheres of influence. Like the star that guided them, we’re called to point others to Jesus.
Here in the UK, where the days are short and we often see our fair share of grey skies, Epiphany Sunday feels doubly significant. It’s a powerful image of light breaking into darkness—not just in a literal, weather-related sense but in the spiritual reality of Christ’s Kingdom. God’s light shines as brightly today as it did when the Magi followed that beacon centuries ago, and it illuminates every heart willing to seek Him.
Reflection Question
- Who might God be calling you to guide towards Jesus? How can you reflect His light in your community this week?
Action Step
Reach out to someone in your life who might be feeling lost or searching for answers. A simple act of kindness, a listening ear, or a word of hope could be the light they need.
A Moment to Reflect
Just as the Magi brought gifts—the best they had—what gifts and talents can you offer Jesus this week? Offer them in prayer and trust that He’ll use them for His glory.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the light of Jesus, shining for all nations. Help us to be mirrors of that light in the world around us. When darkness surrounds us, remind us that Your star still leads and guides. Give us the courage to follow wherever You call and to bring others along the journey. May our lives reflect Your glory, and may we offer You the best of what we have and are. Amen.
