Happy Friday 3rd January 2025! Today, many in the Christian tradition observe the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. It’s a day to reflect on the power, beauty, and authority of Jesus’ name—a name that’s above every other name.
Have you ever considered just how significant a name can be? Names carry identity, authority, and meaning. In ancient Jewish culture, a name often told a story—what the parents hoped for or what they believed about their child. The angel Gabriel made it clear to Mary and Joseph that their child was to be named Jesus, which means ‘The Lord saves’ (Matthew 1:21). This wasn’t just a sentimental choice, but a declaration of His mission and identity.
Think about it: every time you whisper or shout the name of Jesus, you’re declaring, ‘Saviour.’ And not just in a general, abstract way, but in the personal. He’s your Saviour. When you’re struggling, afraid, or unsure of the future, simply speaking His name is an act of faith in His power to save, heal, and restore.
Reflection Verse
Philippians 2:9-10: “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”
A Moment to Reflect with an Encouraging Action
What does the name of Jesus mean to you personally? Reflect on moments where calling His name has made a difference. Whether during times of joy, fear, or challenge, His name carries authority. It shifts atmospheres and breaks chains. Today, make it a point to speak His name over an area of your life where you need His saving power. As you do, trust that He hears you and is at work.
Story Time
Let’s make it relatable. Picture this: you’ve misplaced something important—your car keys or wallet (classic UK panic moment!). You’ve retraced every step, checked every possible corner of the house, and frustration’s kicking in. Cue that moment where, almost instinctively, you say, “Jesus, help me!” And just like that, the item appears in the most obvious place possible. Coincidence? Maybe. But more often than not, calling on His name has a way of shifting our focus from the problem to the power we have in Him. It’s not magic; it’s relationship. It’s that faith connection acknowledging that He’s present and ready to save.
The Name that Conquers Every Fear
Fear, doubt, despair—these things lose their grip when we call on Jesus. Next time you feel overwhelmed, remember the promise embedded in His name: you’re never alone. The King of kings, the one whose name makes heaven and earth stand still, is right beside you.
Let’s pray
Jesus, Your name is above every name. Thank You for the power and hope we have in Your name. Teach us to call on You with confidence and faith, knowing that You save, restore, and heal. Today, we lift Your name over every situation we face, trusting in Your unfailing love. Amen.
