How good does it feel to wake up on a Thursday 2nd January 2025, with the promise of a fresh chapter still unfolding? Oh, and let’s not forget—if you’re in Scotland, it’s still a public holiday. A lingering day of rest! While the rest of the UK might be back to the grind (perhaps with slightly tighter waistbands and half-finished cups of tea in hand), today in Scotland is a gift to pause and reflect. But whether you’re rushing about or still lounging in cosiness, this message is for you.
The start of the year often feels like standing on the edge of a pristine, untouched forest. The trees represent opportunities, challenges, and unknowns. How will we navigate it all? If we’re being honest, many of us dive into January headfirst, fueled by resolutions and leftover mince pies. But there’s something deeply spiritual about pausing—not just for a cup of tea or a quick breather, but intentionally seeking God’s guidance before charging ahead.
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” What a beautiful reminder—we don’t have to tackle every part of the year alone or with perfection. God invites us to step into partnership with Him, to live in His strength, not our own.
So, take a moment wherever you are to pause and breathe. It’s not lazy or unproductive; it’s a spiritual act of trust to stop and listen for God’s voice. Ask Him, “What do You want for me this year, Lord?” It’s a far better question than, “What do I think I need to achieve?”
As today is the second day of the year, let’s also reflect on the number two—a number often associated with partnership or agreement. Think about it: Genesis 2:18 declares, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” From the beginning, God designed us for community, connection, and reliance—not just with others but with Himself. Let’s take full advantage of this symbolic “day of agreement” by centring our plans, hopes, and even worries around walking in step with Him.
Reflection Question
- Have you taken time yet to pause and submit your plans for the year ahead to God? What might He be asking you to rest from or trust Him with today?
A Moment to Reflect with an Encouraging Action
- Write down three areas of your life where you need God’s guidance or strength in 2025. Pray over each one today, asking for His peace and rest to lead you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the beauty of a new year and the reminder that it is not all on us to make it successful. Teach us to rest in You, to trust Your timing and guidance, and to seek Your will before rushing ahead. Today, we lift to You every burden, question, and plan. Lead us by Your Spirit and give us the courage to partner with You this year. Thank You for being gentle and humble in heart, and for walking with us every single day. Amen.
