On this Monday 30th December 2024, the Church remembers Saint Egwin of Worcester, a figure from 8th-century England known for his deep care for orphans and widows. Egwin’s devotion to the vulnerable reminds us of God’s heart for those in need. Isn’t it incredible to think that centuries ago, someone was actively living out the very principles God continues to call us to today?
Egwin’s story mirrors a recurring theme throughout Scripture: God’s passion for justice and mercy for the vulnerable—whether it’s the orphan, the widow, or the stranger among us. James 1:27 puts it plainly: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” It’s not about ticking off religious boxes; it’s about living out a faith that translates into action.
Think about the society we live in today. We might not encounter orphans and widows in the same way Saint Egwin did, but vulnerable people are all around us: the homeless person you pass in town, the lonely elderly neighbour, the single parent struggling to make ends meet. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of life—especially at this time of year—and miss the opportunities God places before us to reflect His love.
Here’s the thing: caring for the vulnerable isn’t optional; it’s foundational. It’s woven into the fabric of who God is. Psalm 68:5 calls Him “a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows.” And as followers of Jesus, we’re called to reflect His character. You might not feel equipped to make a big difference, but even small ripples of kindness can create waves of God’s love. Maybe it’s reaching out to someone who feels forgotten or giving time (not just money) to a charity close to your heart. These actions echo into eternity.
Reflection Verses
- James 1:27 – “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
- Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
A Moment to Reflect with an Encouraging Action
Take a moment to ask God to show you one vulnerable person in your sphere of influence who needs His love this week. Now, make a plan to act. Will you call, visit, or offer practical help? Don’t wait—God is nudging you for a reason.
Prayer
Dear Father, thank You for being a defender of the vulnerable, a Father to the fatherless, and a refuge for the weary. Help me to have eyes to see those in need around me. Give me courage and compassion to step out and reflect Your heart. Like Saint Egwin, may my actions testify to Your great love. Help me to do small things with great love, knowing they matter in Your eternal plan. Amen.
