Steadfast and Courageous: Lessons from St. Thomas Becket

On Sunday 29th December 2024, we pause to remember a significant moment in church history: the martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket on this same day in 1170. Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, stood firm for the authority of the Church against interference by the ruling powers. His steadfast faith eventually cost him his life, murdered in Canterbury Cathedral for defending what he believed was right in God’s eyes. It’s a striking reminder of the cost of discipleship and the courage it often requires.

Becket’s story reminds us of Matthew 16:24, where Jesus said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’ It’s not just about living in a certain way, but about courageously holding onto Christ even when we’re pressured to compromise.

Let’s be honest, most of us won’t face anything like what Becket did. Here in the UK, we enjoy freedoms many believers around the world can’t imagine. But courage is still required for everyday faith: courage to say no to peer pressure, courage to live with integrity, courage to share Jesus’ love, even when it’s not popular or convenient.

Imagine yourself standing in Becket’s shoes—or dare I say, sandals—for a moment. Would you hold firm under persecution? Even in smaller stakes, like a tense workplace conversation, standing firm might feel terrifying. But the good news is, we’re not standing alone. God promises His presence: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go’ (Joshua 1:9).

So how do we build a faith that is courageous in the little moments and the big ones? It starts in the small, daily choices we make: choosing to tune into scripture regularly, to pray for God’s boldness, to show His love to others, to stand for truth even when no one else will. Faith grows stronger as we use it.

A Reflection Question

  • Is there an area of your life where God is calling you to take a bolder stand for Him? How might you respond?

A Moment to Act

Consider an area where you’ve felt afraid to live out your faith, whether that’s being open about your beliefs at work, offering to pray for someone, or simply standing for what’s right. This week, take one small step in boldness, knowing that God’s Spirit empowers and strengthens you.

Finally, hold tight to the words of Romans 8:31: ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ The courage to live out your faith doesn’t come from your strength alone; it’s God’s strength working within you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us the power of steadfast faith through lives like St. Thomas Becket’s. Help us to find courage in our daily walk with You. When we face challenges, remind us that You are with us, giving us the boldness to stand firm. Let Your love be our motivation in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
