Called to Protect the Innocent

Today, Saturday 28th December 2024, marks the sombre but significant observance of Holy Innocents’ Day, also known as the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This day remembers the tragic events told in Matthew 2:16-18, when King Herod’s paranoid grip on power resulted in the massacre of young children in Bethlehem shortly after the birth of Jesus. It’s not an easy or cheerful part of the Christmas story, but it is a reminder of God’s deep compassion and justice for the most vulnerable—particularly children.

The actions of Herod may feel like a far cry from our lives today, but his motives—fear, insecurity, and selfish ambition—are all too recognisable in the human experience. Reflecting on this day helps us ask: are there ways we, too, might inadvertently harm those who are vulnerable by clinging to our own “kingdoms” of comfort or control?

In the middle of this tragedy, it’s vital to remember that God sees those who suffer. Psalm 34:18 reassures us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Even in this dark chapter, God was working His redemptive plan, fulfilling prophecies and bringing hope through the Christ Child.

Protecting the Innocent Today

In the UK, Holy Innocents’ Day can challenge us to think about the ways we’re called to stand up for the vulnerable in our society. This could include children affected by poverty, exploitation, or neglect—or broader injustices we might be tempted to overlook.

Charities like Compassion UK, Safe Families for Children, or initiatives to protect those in the foster care system show us how we can be modern-day guardians of Bethlehem’s innocents. How can we listen and be open to what God is asking us to do to shine His light in dark places?

Reflection Verse

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” — Proverbs 31:8-9

A Moment to Reflect

  • Who are the vulnerable in your world that God might be calling you to protect or advocate for?
  • What actions can you take to make a difference in the life of a child or vulnerable person this season?

Action Step

Research and support a local or global charity that advocates for children or the vulnerable. Or, consider how your voice or resources could help bring hope to a hurting world.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your compassion for the most vulnerable. On this Holy Innocents’ Day, we remember the lives of those who suffered in Bethlehem and the countless innocents who suffer today. Stir our hearts with Your love and justice. Help us speak up and act boldly on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. Show us how we can protect and care for Your treasured children. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
