Living the Light: Lessons from St. John the Evangelist

Today is Friday 27th December 2024, and it also happens to be a special day in the Christian calendar: the Feast Day of St. John the Evangelist. You might know him as one of Jesus’ closest disciples, the beloved one who leaned against Jesus at the Last Supper (John 13:23) and stood faithfully at the foot of the cross (John 19:26-27). John’s life and writings remind us of the transformative power of Christ’s love and truth—the very heart of the Gospel.

What makes St. John stand out is his focus on light and love. You don’t get far into his writings before stumbling upon verses that shine with the power of these two themes: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5) and “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God” (1 John 4:7).

Light in Darkness
As we edge towards the end of December, the days feel darker—and not just because the sun vanishes by mid-afternoon! Christmas can still be a joyful glow in our hearts, but many start to feel distant from that joy amidst winter gloom, family tensions, and post-holiday exhaustion. St. John’s message reminds us that the light of Christ never dims. It shines into the deepest corners of your life, flooding your sadness, fear, or uncertainty with hope.

Think about where you’ve seen Christ’s light this week. Maybe it was in an answered prayer. Perhaps in an unexpected kindness from someone, or maybe even in a quiet moment reading scripture and sensing God nudging you with a truth that you needed to hear. Wherever it is, Christ’s light is constant, even if it flickers quietly some days. Hold onto that truth as John did.

Living Out Love
Another thing John challenges us on is living a life fuelled by God’s love. It’s not enough to just know you’re loved by Jesus—though that’s the best starting point! John calls us to reflect that love to the world. “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:8). Ouch! That’s a strong challenge, isn’t it? But think about the life-changing truth wrapped in that statement: when we allow God’s love to flow through us to others, we’re living in the fullness of His divine nature.

So today, let love lead your day. Maybe that means showing some unexpected kindness to a neighbour (can you drop off your leftover mince pies or lend a hand clearing their soggy recycling bins?). Maybe it’s sending a heartfelt note to someone who needs encouragement. Maybe it’s forgiving a family member’s sharp word over Christmas dinner. Love transforms—and it starts with us.

Reflection Verse

Reflection Question

Where do you need to invite Christ’s light to shine in your life today?

A Moment to Reflect – Encouraging Action:

Take time today to intentionally share Christ’s love with someone. It could be a word of encouragement, an act of service, or simply sitting with someone who feels overlooked. Small acts done in love carry eternal weight.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for the life and example of St. John the Evangelist. Help me to walk in Your light and let it illuminate the dark corners of my heart. Teach me to love like You do—unconditionally, sacrificially, and without fear. When I feel discouraged or weary, help me remember that Your light cannot be overcome. May my life be a reflection of Your light and love, pointing others back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
