Boxing Day, Thursday 26th December 2024, is one of those days that often gets overshadowed. Sandwiched between the sparkle of Christmas Day and the countdown to New Year’s Eve, it can feel like a bit of a ‘leftovers’ day – leftover turkey, leftover mince pies, and, let’s be honest, sometimes leftover energy. But Boxing Day carries with it a beautiful tradition of generosity and charity. Originally, this day was about giving a little extra to those in need – like a thank-you box for household staff or a small token of care for the less fortunate.
As Christians, this is right up our street! Jesus not only taught about giving, but He modelled it powerfully. Consider Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” It’s an invitation to step into the joy of sharing, not just out of abundance but sometimes out of sacrifice, just as Christ did for us.
So, as you stare at the leftover yule log in the fridge or consider whether to brave the Boxing Day sales, let’s pause and ask: How can I embody the spirit of generosity today? Maybe it’s by donating to a local food bank, inviting someone over who’s feeling alone, or simply sending an encouraging message to someone in need of a little light. Generosity isn’t about how much you have; it’s about how much you care.
Reflection Question
What is one way you can share the generosity of Jesus with someone today?
Action Step
Identify a person, project, or cause you can bless today. Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a generous gift, do something that brings joy to someone else.
A Moment to Reflect
Pause and consider the heart of Jesus. When He gave, He gave fully – healing, teaching, feeding, and ultimately laying down His life. Ask Him to show you where He’s calling you to give today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the ultimate gift of Yourself. Teach me to be more like You – to live with a generous spirit that reflects Your heart. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me the courage to act, not tomorrow or ‘when I’ve got more,’ but right now. Help me to remember that even the smallest gift, given in love, can make a world of difference. Thank You for Your unending kindness and the privilege of sharing Your goodness with others. In Your mighty name, I pray. Amen.
