The Humble King: A Christmas Reflection

Merry Christmas! There’s something truly special about Wednesday 25th December 2024, isn’t there? Today, millions of people around the globe pause to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Yes, we enjoy the festive lights, presents, mince pies, and the Queen’s… sorry, King’s speech, but let’s not forget the real gift we’re unwrapping today—God’s love in human form.

Born in a lowly manger, surrounded by straw and animals, the King of kings entered this world in the most humble way imaginable. Not with royal fanfare, but with shepherds and a teenage mum who had said ‘yes’ to God. And this is where the story of Christmas becomes more than just a nativity scene—it becomes deeply personal.

Let’s read what the angels told the shepherds that starry night:

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”Luke 2:10-12

Think about it—the Messiah, long prophesied, choosing humility over majesty. Jesus’ birth in such a humble setting reminds us that He sees us right where we are. You don’t have to have your life perfectly sorted to approach Him. Christ wasn’t born in a palace; He was born in a place where ordinary people could come and find Him. And He’s just as accessible to you today.

Even after more than 2,000 years, the message of Christmas remains the same: God loves you. He sees you. He sent His Son to offer us hope, peace, and new life. And this hope isn’t just seasonal, it’s eternal.

Reflection Verse

John 3:16 reminds us why this day matters so much: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Reflect on the depth of His love for you today.

A Moment to Reflect

Take a moment amidst all the festive fun to sit quietly and reflect: What does the birth of Jesus personally mean to me this Christmas?

Encouraging Action

Why not reread the nativity story in Luke 2 with your family? Let each person share one thing that stands out. If you’re celebrating alone, light a candle and spend time in prayer, thanking Jesus for the hope He brings.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, today we pause to celebrate the most incredible gift—Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for coming to us in the most humble way so that we could know Your great love. Help us to reflect that love to everyone we meet this Christmas season. May the hope of Christ fill our hearts and homes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Merry Christmas!
