Saturday 21st December 2024 marks the Winter Solstice, the day with the longest night and the shortest amount of daylight in the year. It’s fascinating, isn’t it? Even as we stand amid the darkest day, there’s a promise hidden within it: the days will begin to grow longer from here. Light is on its way back. This natural phenomenon has such a beautiful parallel with our faith and the hope we have in Christ.
In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” What a comforting truth. Even when life feels at its darkest—when challenges seem insurmountable, relationships broken, or dreams dim—Jesus is our unfailing light. The Winter Solstice reminds us of this promise. Though it may feel like the long night will never end, dawn always comes, and with it, hope.
Think about the story in John 1:5, where it says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Just as the Solstice guarantees the return of brighter days, our faith in Jesus guarantees that light—His light—will overcome every darkness.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the places in our lives that might feel a bit like this “longest night.” Maybe it’s a season of waiting, illness, financial strain, or fear of the future. While the world around us may celebrate Christmas with fairy lights and festive cheer, we know that Jesus Himself is the true Light, bringing not just seasonal brightness but everlasting hope.
Reflection Question
What is one area of your life where you feel you are waiting for the light to break through?
Action Step
Think of a friend or family member who may also be experiencing a season of darkness. Send them an encouraging message or Scripture today, reminding them that Jesus is the Light that overcomes all darkness.
A Moment to Reflect
Take a walk outside this evening and notice the length of the night. As you glance up at the stars, remember that even in the longest night, the light is present. Whisper a prayer, thanking God for His faithfulness to bring the dawn.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Light of the World. In the seasons of my life that feel like the longest nights, help me to hold on to the promise that Your light will never fade and that Your hope is always dawning anew. Shine through me so that I can carry Your light to others who need it. Thank You for being my strength, my peace, and my joy. Amen.
