Wednesday 18th December 2024 is International Migrants Day, a time to reflect on the journeys, challenges, and contributions of migrants across the world. Did you know there are over 281 million migrants in the world today? That’s more than the entire population of the UK four times over! Migration is deeply woven into the human story, and as Christians, our response to the migrant is one of profound importance because it reflects the character of our God.
The Bible reminds us of this truth. Scripture is rich with stories of migration—Abraham’s journey to a foreign land, Ruth leaving Moab for Bethlehem, the Israelites wandering in the wilderness, and Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt as refugees. Our God is a God who is present in the journey, guiding and providing for people on the move. Leviticus 19:33-34 says: “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
What a convicting and inspiring passage! God calls His people to welcome the stranger, love them like family, and remember their own story of redemption. We are not just called to hospitality; we are called to radical inclusion.
It’s easy, especially in today’s climate of polarising opinions, to view migrants as an issue instead of individuals—human beings created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). Yet Jesus breaks down that mindset in Matthew 25:35 when He says: “I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Could it be that in crossing paths with migrants, we are crossing paths with Jesus Himself?
Think of your own life for a moment. Have you ever been in a place where you felt completely out of your depth—maybe a new workplace, school, church, or even a foreign country on holiday? Now magnify that discomfort a hundredfold. Migration often involves leaving behind everything familiar, stepping into the unknown, and hoping someone will extend kindness. Your smile, your invitation, or your awareness could be the answer to someone’s quiet prayer today.
Reflection Verse
“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:33-34
A Reflection Question with Action
What steps can you take today to show hospitality and kindness to a migrant, refugee, or someone new in your community? Action: Consider reaching out—say hello, start a conversation, or offer help in some practical way.
A Moment to Reflect
This International Migrants Day, can you see how migration is part of God’s greater story? Pray today for the millions who are journeying across nations, seeking safety and new beginnings. Ask God to grant them His provision and protection and to soften your heart toward those who might feel like outsiders.
Prayer
Holy Lord, You are the Good Shepherd who leads Your people through every journey of life. Thank You for your heart of compassion for the vulnerable and for every migrant, refugee, and stranger. Forgive us where we have been indifferent or judgemental. Instead, fill our hearts with love that mirrors Yours—a love that welcomes, protects, and uplifts. Guide me today in practical ways to be a blessing to someone new in my community, so that I might be an extension of Your grace. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
