Today is Thursday 5th December 2024, and it’s International Volunteer Day—a wonderful opportunity to pause and celebrate acts of selfless service around the world. Maybe you’ve been on a community project, helped at a food bank, or simply lent a kind word to someone who needed it. These small yet significant acts demonstrate the heart of Christ. After all, Jesus Himself said, “I have not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).
When we volunteer, we reflect God’s character. John 13:12-15 tells the story of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, an act of humility and love. Picture the Son of God kneeling to wash dirt and grime off the feet of those He led. In a world obsessed with power and status, Jesus shows us that true greatness lies in service.
Volunteering reminds us that we’re part of something bigger—a moment to step beyond our own needs and focus on others. It might be easy to think, “But I don’t have the time,” or, “What difference can I really make?” Yet Galatians 6:9 encourages us: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Every moment you give, whether big or small, matters in the Kingdom of God.
Take today as an opportunity to ask yourself, Where is God calling me to serve? It doesn’t have to be grand. A helping hand to an elderly neighbour, volunteering at church, or even offering prayer for a friend—all of this reflects the love of Jesus.
Reflection Question
What is one practical way you can serve someone this week?
Action Step
Prayerfully consider how you can dedicate time to serving others, whether through a formal volunteering role or through acts of kindness for those in your immediate circle.
A Moment to Reflect
Take a moment to sit with God and ask Him to reveal a specific area where your gifts and time can glorify Him through serving others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the ultimate example of servant-hearted love. Help me to reflect Your humility and compassion today. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and give me the courage and willingness to step out in faith, even when it feels inconvenient. May my service bring You glory and bless others. Amen.
