Wednesday 4th December 2024 is St. Barbara’s Day! Now, I know what you’re thinking: ‘Who’s St. Barbara, and does she come with fireworks?’ Well, not quite, but she is celebrated as a protector against lightning, sudden death, and all sorts of calamities. Her story is one of unwavering faith in the face of persecution, making her life a powerful example of standing firm under the shelter of God’s promises.
This idea of divine protection ties beautifully into Psalm 91:4: ‘He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.’ If you’ve ever watched a bird gather its chicks under its wings, you’ll know it’s not just for warmth—it’s for safety. The psalmist paints such a tender yet strong image of God’s faithfulness as both a shield and shelter.
A Protector in the Storms
St. Barbara stood firm in her faith in Jesus, even when pressured to deny it. Her legacy reminds us that life often throws storms our way—whether it’s relational struggles, financial challenges, or spiritual doubts. But here’s the golden truth: God’s protection doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t face hardship; it means we can take refuge in Him while we weather them. His promises become our shield as we hold onto His Word.
And what a timely reminder this is for us today, especially in the lead-up to Christmas, when so many are juggling busy schedules, emotional burdens, and perhaps even unexpected storms of life.
Reflection Question
- Are there areas in your life where you need to step closer to God’s refuge rather than trying to manage the storm on your own?
A Moment to Reflect
Take five quiet minutes today to meditate on Psalm 91:4. Picture yourself under God’s wings—feathers soft and warm, shielding you from the chaos. Quiet your heart and ask Him to show you how to rest in His strength instead of your own.
An Encouraging Action
If you know someone walking through a stormy season, send them a note or text of encouragement. You could even share Psalm 91:4 with them as a reminder that God is their refuge too.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a shield and shelter in the storms of life. When I feel overwhelmed or shaken, remind me that I can always find refuge under Your wings. Make Your faithfulness real to me today, and help me trust in Your promises. I also lift up those who are weathering difficult seasons—may Your presence bring them peace like no other. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
