Thursday 28th November 2024 — Today marks the birthday of the legendary poet, painter, and visionary, William Blake. Known for his creative genius, Blake was a man ahead of his time — an artist who had the ability to capture deep spiritual truths, often communicating them in intense and imaginative ways. While some might have considered him eccentric (and perhaps we all know a ‘Blake’ or two in our own circles!), he was a man of deep God-given vision and creativity. Maybe you’re not writing epic poetry or painting dramatic illustrations, but God has given each of us the powerful ability to create and envision something beautiful in His name. Colossians 3:23 says, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’
Today’s celebration of William Blake’s creative legacy invites us to reflect on how we can use our unique gifts and creativity, for the glory of God. Whether you’re a painter, a parent, or a project manager, the calling to approach life with creativity is there. Don’t worry if you can’t rhyme like Blake or paint like Michelangelo. God isn’t asking you to be Blake; He is asking you to be you — filled with His Holy Spirit, fuelled by vision, and emboldened by purpose.
Blake once said, “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear… as it is: Infinite.” Wow, that could sound like something out of a very enthusiastic youth worker’s sermon, right? He seemed to live his life with the kind of kingdom-minded vision that looked beyond the everyday mundanities and saw something far richer, far deeper. But here’s the thing: Jesus gives us this kind of clarity too! It’s why we’re called to look beyond what is seen and fix our eyes on what is unseen (2 Corinthians 4:18). To dare to dream bigger than our circumstances, to step into His transformative power and creative flow.
Maybe today is your day to start viewing your world as Blake did — seeing God’s hand at work in the infinite possibilities around you. In Ephesians 2:10, we’re told, ‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ That means your creativity is no accident! Whether you’re making a meal for your family, designing a business plan, or singing in the car, God’s fingerprint is all over your imagination, and He’s inviting you to live boldly, creating for His joy and glory!
