Crowning Christ our King

Sunday 24th November 2024 marks a rather special day in the Christian calendar—Christ the King Sunday. It’s a day that wraps up the liturgical year with a divine statement: Christ reigns supreme over all creation. Alright, so what does that really mean for us today? Well, let’s break this down – think of it as the coronation of not just ANY king, but the King of Kings. And this isn’t a king who rules from a palace, but from the throne of our hearts. Jesus isn’t waiting to be accepted into some palace of gold and marble; He’s knocking on the door to YOUR life.

Here’s the thing about kingship—earthly kings eventually mess up. Power goes to their heads, wealth corrupts, and prestige isolates. History, including our own in the UK, has shown us that absolute power does something to people. But what does power do to Jesus? He uses it to serve. The Gospels remind us, ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve’ (Mark 10:45). He is the King who serves. That’s pretty radical, isn’t it?

Just imagine acknowledging Christ as your King today. What does that look like? It might be letting go of areas of your life that you’ve tried to control yourself. Perhaps it’s time to release pride, anxiety, or fear, and let Jesus reign over that instead. We don’t have to exhaust ourselves being kings of our own lives. Instead, we can acknowledge His authority and live in the joy, peace, and security that comes with it. And you know what? There’s a freedom in this submission. In a world that sells independence and self-reliance as success, stepping under Christ’s authority might just be the most radical rebellion against worldliness.

Reflection Verse

‘The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake.’ — Psalm 99:1

Now, ask yourself: ‘Is Jesus reigning in every area of my life?’ Or, are there still parts where you just can’t seem to hand over control? Maybe it’s your work stress, family dynamics, or even your plans for the future. Take today to reflect on these things and ask Christ to be Lord over them.

A Moment to Reflect

Has Jesus been wearing the crown in your life? If not, what’s been sitting on the throne that belongs to Him? Today, as you recognise Christ the King, declare with your heart that His love, grace and Lordship will lead you.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, on this Christ the King Sunday, I recognise Your rule over my life. Help me to surrender every area to You, no matter how tightly I’ve held onto it before. Let me know the peace that comes from trusting You as my King—both now and forevermore. Amen.
