Living With Courage: Lessons from St. Edmund’s Faith

Wednesday 20th November 2024 is the Feast Day of St. Edmund, King and Martyr, a British hero of faith whose remarkable stand for Christ serves as a timeless inspiration. His story could rival any epic film but with a much deeper message about living with courage and conviction. After all, there’s something powerful about standing firm in faith even when it’s costly.

A brief recap: St. Edmund was King of East Anglia during the 9th century and he fiercely refused to renounce his Christian faith when confronted by invading Viking forces. The result? His martyrdom. But his courage, even in the face of death, is what sets him apart for us today.

There’s a lot to be admired in a person who, like St. Edmund, would rather lose their throne—and even their life—than abandon their faith. It’s a perfect day to reflect on what it means for us to have the same courage in our own lives.

Courage That Counts

The Bible is packed with examples of godly men and women who stood strong when the situation seemed dire—think of Daniel in the lion’s den or Esther standing before the king. But one especially relevant scripture for today is 2 Timothy 1:7: ‘For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.’

This verse is a reminder that God equips us with everything we need to stand tall in any situation—even those times when our faith feels challenged. We can glean from St. Edmund’s story that God’s power can give us backbone, boldness, and the bravery we need to face difficulties without compromising the truths we believe in.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in today’s culture, where Christian values are sometimes at odds with the prevailing norms. But like King Edmund, we have the privilege and power to boldly proclaim Jesus as Lord, no matter what others may think or say.

A Moment To Reflect: How Steadfast is Your Faith?

When life pressures mount, do we compromise, or do we stand firm like King Edmund? Take a moment today to reflect on your own walk of faith. Are there areas where you’re being invited to take a stronger stand? Perhaps in your workplace, your school, or even among friends and family?

Reflection Verse

Let’s focus on Joshua 1:9: ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’

This was God’s message to Joshua, but it’s also His encouragement to us today. Wherever we are called to step out in faith or exercise courage, we do so knowing He is always with us.

Action Step

Today, seek an opportunity to exercise courage, whether it’s sharing your faith with someone or standing up for what’s right in a tough situation. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit of boldness and power.

Prayer

‘Heavenly Father, thank You for the courage of believers like St. Edmund, whose faith never wavered. Help me, Lord, to stand firm in my own life, to boldly live for You even in difficult times. Fill me with Your Spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. Let my life bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.’
