Did you know that 13th November 2024 marks World Kindness Day? It’s a day set aside globally to encourage acts of kindness, big and small, in the hope of creating a ripple effect across communities. But for us as Christians, kindness isn’t just a once-a-year event—it’s part of our everyday calling.
Kindness Rooted in Scripture
The Bible is clear about the importance of kindness. In Colossians 3:12, Paul writes, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” This verse reminds us that kindness should be a part of who we are, like a garment we put on each day. Just as you wouldn’t leave the house without putting on clothes, Paul encourages us not to go through our day without putting on kindness.
While we may recognise the need for kindness, sometimes life gets in the way. Work pressures, financial strain, or even a crowded commute can leave us feeling more inclined to snap than to smile. But here’s where Scripture offers wisdom—kindness isn’t just something we summon from within; it’s a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). When we stay connected to God through prayer and His Word, His Spirit enables us to live out kindness in a way that feels authentic, even in tough situations.
Why Kindness Matters
You might think, “What difference can my small act of kindness make?” But consider Jesus’ teaching on the mustard seed in Matthew 13:31-32—a tiny seed that grows into a large tree. Likewise, a small act of kindness can have an enormous impact. Think about a time when someone’s small gesture of kindness changed your day or shifted your perspective. Perhaps it was a thoughtful word, a helping hand, or just a smile from a stranger.
In a world where stress and busyness often dominate, World Kindness Day reminds us to be intentional about showing kindness. But for Christians, it goes deeper. Our kindness is rooted in the love of God, who showed the ultimate kindness by sending Jesus to die for us. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That’s the kind of radical kindness we’re called to mirror.
Reflection Question with Action Step
- Reflection Question: In what areas of your life can you be more intentional about showing kindness? Is there someone you’ve overlooked or been too busy to help?
- Action Step: Take a moment today to show kindness to someone who may not expect it. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, paying for someone’s coffee, or simply speaking a word of encouragement—let your action reflect God’s love.
Kindness That Transforms
When we live out kindness, it doesn’t just bless others; it transforms us too. Proverbs 11:17 says, “Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.” In other words, kindness is a win-win! When we choose to be kind, it brings us joy and peace, fostering a heart of gratitude. We start to see people differently—not as inconveniences, but as individuals created in the image of God.
The great thing about kindness is that it’s accessible to everyone. You don’t need wealth, status, or a lot of free time to be kind. It can be as simple as holding a door, offering a smile, or sending an encouraging message to a friend who’s had a rough day. These seemingly small acts carry the power to build bridges, heal wounds, and create connections.
A Moment to Reflect with Encouraging Action
- Reflection Verse: Ephesians 4:32—“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Let this verse be your guide today.
- Encouraging Action: Challenge yourself to show at least one act of kindness today. Be intentional, and remember that it’s not the size of the act, but the heart behind it that matters most. Maybe send a text to a friend, check in on a neighbour, or help someone in need.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the kindness You’ve shown us through Jesus Christ. Help us to live out that same kindness in our daily lives, reflecting Your love in every interaction. Give us the strength to be kind even when it’s inconvenient or difficult. May our actions today and every day reflect Your heart and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
