On Thursday, 7th November 2024, one of the events celebrated globally is International Stout Day. While this day might seem focused on a particular type of dark, hearty beer, there are actually some meaningful lessons we can draw from this celebration, especially when viewed through the lens of scripture.
Stout beers are known for their strength and depth of flavour. But interestingly, the word “stout” originally meant proud or brave, eventually evolving to describe something strong. Historically, stout beer emerged as a variation of porter, with the distinction being the use of unmalted roasted barley, giving it a distinct, bold taste. These qualities — depth, strength, and boldness — can resonate deeply in our Christian walk.
As Christians, we are called to have a stout heart. The Bible often speaks of God’s strength being made perfect in our weakness. When we feel inadequate or overwhelmed, God provides the strength we need. In Philippians 4:13, we are reminded: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Like stout beer that derives its rich flavour through a refining process, so too are we strengthened and refined through our trials and reliance on God.
Reflection Verse
Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Think about how stouts stand out from other beers — thicker, richer, and more robust. Similarly, as believers, we are called to stand firm in our faith, even when life gets tough. While others may wilt under pressure, we have an unshakable foundation in Christ. When trials come, we can lean on God’s promise that He will be our strength. Much like the brewing process for stout beer, our character is refined and strengthened through life’s challenges.
A Moment to Reflect
- Reflection Question: What area of your life do you feel weak or uncertain about right now?
- Encouraging Action: Take time today to bring that area to God in prayer. Ask Him to give you the strength and boldness to move forward in faith.
Even on International Stout Day, which might seem trivial on the surface, we can draw parallels to our walk with Christ. Sometimes the small, seemingly unrelated things in life — like the history of a particular type of beer — can reveal deep truths about faith, strength, and perseverance.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our source of strength. When we feel weak or discouraged, remind us that Your strength is made perfect in our weakness. Help us to rely on You daily, trusting that You will equip us to face every challenge with boldness and courage. May we walk confidently in Your promises, knowing that You are always with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
