Sunday 13th October 2024 is a day that carries with it the rhythm of rest. For many of us, Sunday is the one day in the week where we can slow down, breathe, and perhaps enjoy a cup of tea without checking the time every five minutes. But today, let’s look deeper into what God desires for us on days like these. We often associate Sundays with a break from the busyness of life, but what if this day is more than just a break? What if it’s a day meant to restore our souls?
The Sabbath Principle – A Gift for Us
While 13th October 2024 may not mark a global celebration, we can still connect it to a biblical truth—Sabbath rest. In Exodus 20:8-10, God commands His people to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy, setting aside one day a week for rest. It’s a command that goes beyond just stopping work; it’s about finding restoration in Him. A chance to hit pause and reset.
Now, we might not always feel the luxury of a true Sabbath—especially when the world keeps spinning at breakneck speed. We’ve got responsibilities, schedules, and those never-ending to-do lists. But the heart of the Sabbath is not just about not doing things. It’s about resting in God’s presence, reconnecting with Him, and letting Him refresh us for what lies ahead.
A Rest for Our Souls
Psalm 23:1-3 reminds us of God’s desire to give us rest: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Sometimes, we need to let God make us lie down in green pastures—because, let’s face it, we often struggle to stop ourselves.
The stress of everyday life can easily take over, and before we know it, we’re burnt out, worn down, and running on empty. But here’s the thing—God never intended for us to live on fumes. His desire is for us to be continually renewed, to live from a place of abundance, not exhaustion. This is why taking time to rest, especially on a day like today, is not just about self-care—it’s about spiritual obedience.
The Gift of Time with God
In a world that glorifies productivity, resting can feel unproductive. Yet, Jesus Himself took time to withdraw from the crowds and spend quiet moments with the Father (see Luke 5:16). If Jesus, who had the most important mission in history, made time for rest, then surely we should do the same.
Today, on Sunday 13th October 2024, I encourage you to carve out intentional time with God. Whether it’s sitting quietly with a cup of tea, taking a walk in the park, or reading scripture—allow yourself to be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10). Rest isn’t just something nice we do when we have the time. It’s something we need—spiritually, emotionally, and even physically.
Reflection Verse
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
A Moment to Reflect with Encouraging Action
Reflection Question: How can you create more space in your life to rest and reconnect with God? Are there areas in your life where you’ve been running on empty?
Action Step: Today, set aside 30 minutes to rest in God’s presence. Let go of distractions, and simply spend time in prayer or quiet reflection. Allow Him to refresh your soul.
Prayer
Lord, we thank You for the gift of rest. On this day, we surrender our weariness and burdens to You. Help us to recognise the importance of Sabbath in our lives and to prioritise time in Your presence. Restore our souls and fill us with Your peace. Teach us to trust in Your provision, knowing that as we rest, You are still at work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
