Reflecting Christ’s Light

Good morning, everyone! Today is Saturday 5th October 2024, and did you know that today is World Teachers’ Day? Celebrated across the globe, this day is dedicated to honouring educators who shape minds and inspire hearts. Teachers have the ability to impact lives in profound ways—just as we, as followers of Christ, are called to teach and disciple others in the truth of the Gospel.

Whether we are formal teachers or not, we all have the responsibility to pass on what we know about God and His Word to others. Matthew 28:19-20 reminds us of the Great Commission, where Jesus instructs His disciples, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Teaching is not just a profession—it’s a calling. In the same way, we are all teachers of the faith, whether we’re mentoring a friend, raising children, or simply living out the Gospel in front of others.

The Power of Teaching

You may not stand in front of a classroom, but every day, in small or big ways, you have the chance to influence others through your words, actions, and choices. Proverbs 22:6 gives us this wisdom: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

This verse shows us how vital it is to instil God’s truths early on in our children, families, and those in our communities. The lessons we share, whether explicitly through teaching or implicitly through example, can have a lasting impact. Sometimes, we may never see the immediate fruits of our efforts, but like good teachers, we trust that God is working in hearts long after the lessons have been taught.

Jesus, the Master Teacher

It’s impossible to talk about teaching without looking at Jesus as our greatest example. The Bible often refers to Him as “Teacher” (Rabbi), and throughout the Gospels, we see Him using stories, parables, and everyday situations to impart heavenly wisdom. What made Jesus such an extraordinary teacher? He knew how to connect with people on a personal level, He spoke with authority, and most importantly, He lived out what He taught. There’s nothing more powerful than a teacher whose life reflects their lessons.

As Christians, we can look to Jesus not only as our Saviour but as our role model in teaching. Whether we are leading Bible studies, offering a word of encouragement, or simply guiding a friend through a tough season, we have the opportunity to reflect Christ’s light through teaching others.

Reflection Verse and Action Step

Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom.”

Action Step: Take time today to reflect on who you’re teaching or influencing in your life. Is there someone God has placed on your heart to encourage or guide? Maybe a colleague, a friend, or a family member. This weekend, make a deliberate effort to share something you’ve learned from God’s Word with them—whether it’s in a conversation, a prayer, or through the way you live.

A Moment to Reflect with Encouraging Action

It’s easy to underestimate the power of teaching in our everyday lives. You might feel that you’re not “qualified” or “holy enough” to teach others about faith, but God uses ordinary people to share His extraordinary message. Just like Jesus chose fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday folk to be His disciples, He chooses us, too. The most important qualification is simply having a heart that’s willing to reflect His love.

So, as we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, let’s remember that we are all teachers in God’s kingdom. Whether you’re actively discipling someone or simply living in a way that reflects Christ, you are influencing others—often in ways you may never see.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the teachers who have impacted our lives, and for Jesus, the greatest Teacher of all. Help us to reflect Your truth in all we say and do, teaching others through both our words and our actions. Guide us to be faithful in sharing Your love, wisdom, and grace with those You’ve placed in our lives. We ask for wisdom and courage to disciple others and be examples of Your light in a world that needs You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
