Stepping Out in Faith

Good morning! Today, Thursday 19th September 2024, might feel like another ordinary day, but let’s dig a little deeper. On this day in 1783, two brothers, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier, sent the first living creatures— a sheep, a duck, and a rooster— into the sky in a hot air balloon. Now, that may sound a bit odd for today’s devotion, but bear with me!

The Montgolfier brothers’ experiment was a bold leap into the unknown. Their balloon lifted these unsuspecting animals into the air for the first time ever, marking a huge moment in human history. Imagine the sheer faith it took to step out and try something that had never been done before.

Isn’t that a little like our journey with God? We often find ourselves in situations where we feel as if we’re being asked to take a leap of faith, not knowing exactly how things will turn out. Whether it’s a new job, a difficult decision, or stepping into a ministry you’ve never been part of before, it can feel like you’re hanging up there in the air, not fully sure of where or how you’ll land.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

It’s easy to say “trust God” when things are going well, but what about when life throws us into the unknown? Like the Montgolfier brothers’ balloon, sometimes God’s plan for us is to lift us into uncharted territory. We might not see the landing site yet, but we can trust that God sees it clearly.

A Moment to Reflect

What’s your hot air balloon moment today? Where is God asking you to step out in faith? Is it a relationship, a new responsibility, or maybe something that you’ve been putting off because it feels too risky or uncertain?

Remember, even small acts of obedience can lead to life-changing moments. It wasn’t the size of the balloon that made the difference; it was the courage to send it up into the sky that changed everything.

Encouraging Action

Take a moment today to reflect on where God might be asking you to trust Him more deeply. Is there a decision you need to surrender to His wisdom? Pray for courage, just like the Montgolfier brothers needed to step out into the unknown. Commit today to taking that step of faith, trusting that God’s got the landing all figured out.

Reflection Verse

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”2 Corinthians 5:7

Let this verse encourage you today. As Christians, we’re called to live by faith, not by what we can see or understand. The beauty of our journey is that we don’t need all the answers; we just need to be willing to step out in faith and trust that God will guide us.
