Good morning, friends! 🌤️ It’s Sunday 15th September 2024, and while it might seem like an ordinary day, today is also celebrated as International Day of Democracy. Now, before you start thinking, “Hang on, what does democracy have to do with my faith?” bear with me. There’s something in today’s theme that can speak right into our walk with Jesus.
Democracy, at its heart, is about giving everyone a voice, ensuring fairness, and allowing each person to participate in shaping their community. It’s about freedom, responsibility, and, above all, hope that things can be better if we work together. Doesn’t that sound a little like the Kingdom of God?
In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul writes about how the church is like a body with many parts, each playing a vital role. “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (v. 27). The beauty of democracy mirrors the church’s call to unity, where every person has a role and every voice matters. Just as democracy thrives when people are involved, the Kingdom of God grows when we all play our part.
But, let’s be honest, there are days when we don’t feel like we’re making a difference. Maybe you feel like your contributions are small, or that no one notices the quiet ways you serve. Maybe you’re in a season of life where things seem a little mundane. That’s okay! Let me remind you of Zechariah 4:10 which says, “Who dares despise the day of small things?” Sometimes, it’s in the smallest acts of faithfulness that God is most glorified.
Just like in a democracy, where every vote and every voice matters, in God’s kingdom, every prayer, every word of encouragement, and every act of kindness counts. Don’t underestimate the power of the seemingly small things you do each day. Whether it’s sharing a cup of tea with a neighbour, praying for a friend, or helping out at church, these are the moments where God’s love shines through.
Jesus Himself often found beauty in the simple. Think about the parable of the mustard seed in Matthew 13:31-32. That tiny seed, though small, grew into a mighty tree that gave shelter to the birds. Similarly, the little things we do in faith can grow into something much bigger than we imagine.
So, on this International Day of Democracy, let’s celebrate the fact that in God’s kingdom, everyone matters. Your voice, your actions, and your faithfulness have value. Let’s remember that even in the everyday, God is at work in us and through us. As you go about your Sunday, whether you’re relaxing at home, attending church, or catching up with family, know that God is using even the smallest parts of your day to build His Kingdom.
Let’s embrace the beauty of simplicity today, knowing that every step of faith matters, no matter how small. Have a blessed Sunday, and let’s continue to be the hands and feet of Christ wherever we are. 🙌
