Holding Fast to the Cross: Finding Strength on Holy Cross Day

Good morning, friends! 🌞 Today is Saturday 14th September 2024, a day that’s celebrated in some Christian traditions as Holy Cross Day. Now, if you’re like me, you might be wondering, “What’s Holy Cross Day all about?” No, it’s not an excuse to wear your favourite cross jewellery (although feel free!). It’s actually a day marked to remember the cross of Christ and its significance in our faith.

Think about it—what better symbol do we have as Christians than the cross? It’s everywhere. Some of us wear it around our necks, hang it in our homes, or even use it as a tattoo. But beyond the image, the cross represents something much deeper: sacrifice, love, and redemption.

When Jesus was crucified, the cross was not a thing of beauty. It was ugly, brutal, and a reminder of death. Yet through His death on that cross, Jesus turned it into a symbol of life and victory. It’s a reminder that God can take the ugliest, most painful situations and turn them into something beautiful. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The cross is where God’s love was poured out for all of us, regardless of who we are or what we’ve done.

What strikes me about Holy Cross Day is that it encourages us not to forget the power of the cross in our daily lives. We live in a world that often pulls us in different directions, but the cross serves as a constant reminder of where our hope and strength come from. When we feel weak, burdened, or overwhelmed by life’s challenges, we can look to the cross and remember that Jesus has already carried the weight for us.

In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said to His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” It’s a powerful invitation to follow Christ’s example—not just in moments of glory, but in moments of difficulty too. Taking up our cross means that we choose daily to trust God, even when things feel heavy. It means that we walk in His strength, not our own.

So today, on this Holy Cross Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the power of the cross in our lives. Whatever burdens you’re carrying, whatever fears or uncertainties are on your heart, remember that Jesus has already walked the hardest road. He did it out of love for you, and He’s right there with you, offering His strength.

As you go about your Saturday, let the cross be more than just a symbol—it’s a declaration that in Christ, we are free, forgiven, and loved beyond measure. So, take up your cross, not with a heavy heart, but with the knowledge that God is working in your life, even in the toughest moments. Have a blessed day, and let’s keep our eyes fixed on Jesus! 🙏
