Embracing God’s Protection on Friday the 13th

Good morning, everyone! 👋 Today is Friday, 13th September 2024, and let’s face it—Friday the 13th has a bit of a reputation, doesn’t it? You might already be hearing the murmurs: “Uh-oh, bad luck day!” Whether you’re the type to laugh it off or maybe avoid walking under ladders just in case, there’s something curious about how the number 13 became linked to misfortune.

The world has a funny way of attaching meaning to things that God doesn’t really care about. “Unlucky 13”? Where did that come from? Even buildings skip the 13th floor! Yet, for all the myths, fears, and urban legends, as believers, we’re called to live in a higher reality—one that doesn’t bend to superstition or fear, but stands firm on faith.

Here’s what the Bible says about fear: 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” In other words, we don’t have to shrink back, whether it’s Friday the 13th or facing actual, real-life challenges. God didn’t design us to live in fear, but to walk in the strength and peace of His Spirit.

Think of the Israelites when they faced their own “Friday the 13th” moment, so to speak. When they came to the Red Sea, trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the water, fear must have gripped them (Exodus 14). It felt like an impossible situation—no way forward, no way back. But Moses, full of faith, told them, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” (Exodus 14:13). Spoiler alert: God didn’t just make a way, He made a highway through the sea! 🌊

We can take that same encouragement today. No matter what superstitions or situations make us feel trapped, God is always working behind the scenes. He’s a God of deliverance and protection. And let’s not forget—Jesus Himself experienced fear but overcame it. When He prayed in Gethsemane before going to the cross, He knew the weight of what was coming. Yet, He pressed on, saying, “Not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42). If Jesus can face the cross, we can certainly face a Friday the 13th!

So, what does this mean for us today? Simply this: live boldly! Friday the 13th? Just another day to walk in the fullness of God’s grace and power. Whether you’ve got a busy workday ahead, a pile of laundry that’s been staring at you for days (yes, even that!), or something more daunting, God’s got you. His Spirit lives in you, not to make you timid, but to give you power, love, and self-discipline.

Next time someone mentions it’s “bad luck” today, smile and remember: luck has nothing on the Creator of the universe! 💪 Have a blessed Friday and let’s embrace it with the courage God has given us.
