Happy Monday, 13th January 2025! Today is the Feast Day of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, an inspiring figure from the early Church who courageously stood against heresy and defended the truth of the Gospel. If you’ve ever felt like you’re the lone voice standing for what’s right, Hilary’s story will resonate with you. Let’s dive in!
Saint Hilary lived during a turbulent time in Church history (the 4th century, to be exact), when a belief called Arianism — which denied the divinity of Jesus — was spreading like wildfire. Hilary, a gifted theologian and the Bishop of Poitiers, passionately defended the truth of Jesus’ full divinity. He faced exile for speaking the truth, but he didn’t back down. His perseverance reminds us that protecting our faith and standing firm in truth often comes with a cost, but it’s a cost worth bearing.
Now, you might be thinking, “That’s all very admirable, but what does it mean for me in my everyday life?” Well, the world today isn’t all that different from Saint Hilary’s time. We’re often surrounded by voices that challenge or dilute our faith, whether it’s subtle cultural pressures to compromise our beliefs or more direct questions about what we stand for. It can be tricky to stick to the truth, but this is exactly why Hilary’s example is so powerful.
The Bible has much to say about standing firm in our faith. One of my favourite scriptures is Ephesians 6:13, which tells us: “Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Isn’t that encouraging? God equips us to stand firm, just as He equipped Hilary.
So, how can we stand firm like Saint Hilary in our everyday walk with Christ? Here are three practical tips:
- Know the Word: Hilary was able to defend the truth because he deeply understood scripture and the nature of Jesus. Make time to read and meditate on the Bible so you’re ready to give an answer when needed (1 Peter 3:15).
- Pray for Boldness: The early believers prayed for boldness amidst challenges (Acts 4:29). Pray for courage to graciously but firmly stand for Jesus in your own sphere of influence.
- Lean on the Spirit: Remember, it’s not about your strength, but God’s. The Holy Spirit empowers and equips you to stand firm and share truth with grace (John 14:26).
Reflection Questions
- Are there areas in my life where I’ve felt pressured to compromise my faith? How can I stand firm in those situations?
- What practical steps can I take this week to deepen my understanding of God’s Word?
A Moment to Reflect and Act
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you might need extra courage or wisdom. Commit this area to God, asking Him for strength to stand firm like Saint Hilary. Then, take one step today to share your faith — whether that’s having a meaningful conversation, offering prayer, or simply being unashamed of Jesus in your workplace or community.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Saint Hilary, who courageously stood for the truth of who Jesus is. Help me to stand firm in my faith, no matter the challenges I face. Equip me with Your Word, fill me with boldness, and empower me by Your Holy Spirit to live for You. May my life point others toward Your truth and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
