What Elvis Can Teach Us About the King of Kings

Wednesday 8th January 2025 – Today marks the birthday of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Whether or not you’re a fan of his music, there’s no denying the global influence of this icon. With hit songs, famous dance moves, and dazzling performances, Elvis became a cultural sensation, earning him the title ‘the King.’ But today, let’s pause and reflect on an even greater title—the King of Kings, Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:16).

Imagine the adoration Elvis received during his lifetime—screaming fans, sold-out stadiums, endless merchandise. Yet, even the brightest earthly glory pales in comparison to the glory of our eternal King. Elvis may have been crowned by human hearts, but Jesus was crowned with divinity from eternity past. He doesn’t just sing songs that touch our souls—He speaks words of life that save our souls (John 6:68).

Interestingly, Elvis often acknowledged his love for gospel music, and his faith shone through in songs like “How Great Thou Art.” If someone as iconic as Elvis could see the beauty of humbling himself before God, shouldn’t that remind us to do the same? While he was hailed by millions, Elvis—like all of us—knew he needed a Saviour.

So here’s a thought: what are you bowing to today? Fame? Success? Approval? Or the King of Kings? Earthly idols can’t save us. They crumble, no matter how legendary they seem. But Jesus invites us to exchange temporary pursuits for a kingdom that will never end (Matthew 6:33).

Reflection Verse

“On his robe and on his thigh, he has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.” – Revelation 19:16

A Question to Ponder

What “kings” in your life are competing for Jesus’ rightful place? Are there things you hold onto too tightly: achievements, possessions, or approval? Today, pray and surrender them to Jesus.

A Moment to Reflect

Think about Elvis’s legacy, his fame, and the deep love so many had for him. Now consider the legacy of Jesus Christ. Are you living for what’s eternal or what’s fleeting? Challenge yourself to exchange temporary distractions for eternal fulfilment. Open your Bible, pray, and allow God to reign even in the hidden corners of your heart.

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for being the eternal King of Kings. Help me to recognise the things I’ve placed as ‘kings’ above You in my heart. I surrender my idols, distractions, and fears at Your feet. Fill me with awe for Your glory and reign in every part of my life. All hail the King of Kings! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
