Thursday 12th December 2024 marks the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe—a day celebrated especially in Mexico but honoured worldwide for reminding us of God’s miraculous care. In the 16th century, a humble peasant named Juan Diego encountered the Virgin Mary on a hill near Mexico City. She revealed herself as a mother to all and asked that a church be built in her name. Against all odds, her request was fulfilled, and her image was miraculously imprinted on Juan’s cloak—a sign of her intercession and God’s grace.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—’Why is this relevant to my Thursday in the UK, in 2024?’ Believe it or not, her story mirrors truths from God’s Word that are just as alive on a rainy December day as they were back then.
Isaiah 49:15-16 reminds us, ‘Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.’
Like Mary’s care for Juan, this verse reassures us of a love that is both unfailing and intensely personal. Can we take a moment to grasp it? God never forgets us. Not in our chaos, our doubts, or even in those moments when prayer feels like shouting into the void. Mary’s care was a reflection of that divine truth—no barriers of class, culture, or circumstance stood in the way of God reaching Juan Diego. And today, nothing stands in the way of God reaching YOU.
Maybe this season brings stress about money, family conflict, or concerns for loved ones. Perhaps you feel like you’re lugging your own ‘cloak’ of burdens around. Let today be a reminder: There’s a God Who sees you, loves you deeply, and acts decisively on your behalf—just as He did for Juan. And just as He engraved Juan’s story on a tilma (cloak), He’s engraved YOUR name in the palms of His hands.
Reflection Question
Are there burdens you’re carrying today that you need to lay before God, trusting in His unfailing love? What step can you take, even now, to draw closer to Him?
Encouraging Action
Pause today. Find a few stolen moments—on your lunch break, before bed, or even in the car—to ask for God’s intercession over your worries. Pray boldly, knowing that just as He worked miracles on a Mexican hillside centuries ago, He’s just as active in your postcode.
A Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your relentless love, a love that reaches past my doubts, my anxieties, and my flaws to hold me close. Help me to see that I am never forgotten, never hidden from Your sight. As You once worked miracles through ordinary people like Juan Diego, help me trust that You can work in my life, too. Today, I lay my burdens at Your feet and open my hands to receive Your peace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
