Living Justice: Walking Humbly With God on Human Rights Day

Today is Tuesday 10th December 2024, and it’s Human Rights Day—a day commemorated globally, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. It’s a day to pause and remember the importance of justice, equality, and defending the innate dignity God has placed in every person. After all, scripture tells us that we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). What a beautiful truth to hold onto!

Though the idea of universal rights feels modern, the heart of justice has always been central to God’s design. The prophet Micah puts it succinctly: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Such a profound verse, isn’t it? But let’s be honest, walking humbly and loving mercy doesn’t come naturally when someone cuts in the queue at Tesco, does it?

On Human Rights Day, we’re reminded that God calls us not only to stand up for our own rights but also to stand up for the rights of the marginalised, the oppressed, and those without a voice. Remember how Jesus took time for the outcasts—the woman at the well, the tax collectors, the lepers? He saw their humanity and treated them with dignity, love, and compassion.

But perhaps, instead of only focusing outward, we also need to reflect inward. Are there areas in our own lives where we fail to extend fairness, mercy, or kindness to others? Do we hold grudges against a neighbour, judge someone we don’t understand, or simply ignore the needs of others because we’re too busy scrolling through Instagram reels? Justice starts small—it begins in our hearts before it flows out into our families, workplaces, and communities.

So today, let’s act on Micah’s call. What can you do to champion God’s justice? Maybe it’s as simple as thanking your postie who works tirelessly in the cold, or as intentional as writing to your MP about homelessness initiatives in your area. Perhaps it’s even speaking up in defence of someone at work who’s being treated unfairly. Whatever it is, big or small, do it humbly, with love and mercy leading the way.

Reflection Verse

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

A Moment to Reflect

  1. Are there ways I can show mercy and act justly in my day-to-day routine?
  2. How can I intentionally uphold the dignity of someone around me today?

Encouraging Action

Today, take one specific action that reflects God’s heart for justice—whether it’s speaking up, giving generously, or simply showing love and kindness to someone who feels invisible.

Closing Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for creating every person in Your image and for loving us all equally. Help us to have hearts that reflect Your justice, mercy, and humility. Give us practical ways to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and teach us to love more like You. May we walk humbly with You, bringing Your kingdom’s values into every place we go today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
