Monday 25th November 2024 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day that presses us to consider our role in the fight against injustice. Around the world, countless women live in fear, facing oppression and violence, sometimes in silence and shame. As Christians, it’s essential we take a moment to reflect on how God calls us not just to be witnesses of the problem, but to be part of the solution.
We can fall into the trap of seeing injustice and thinking, “Well, that’s just the way the world is.” But scripture makes it clear that our God is one of justice. Consider Micah 6:8, which reminds us to ‘act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.’ We are called not just to care passively, but to act—boldly, decisively, and with love.
Think of the story in John 8:1-11 where Jesus defended the woman caught in adultery. He didn’t just brush aside the social injustice she was facing; He stood up to the accusers, offering both mercy and justice. His example challenges us to speak out on behalf of the voiceless, just as He did. Because here’s the thing: it’s easier to turn our heads, or scroll past the headlines, than it is to step into the mess of brokenness. But we’re called to be the body of Christ, and often that means stepping into uncomfortable places with His light.
As we pray for victims of violence today—those who are suffering in silence—we must also pray for boldness ourselves. Boldness to speak out when it’s easier to stay quiet. Boldness to advocate for those who can’t advocate for themselves. And boldness to act when we’re faced with situations where we can present practical help and compassion. From small actions like checking in on a friend, to larger systems like joining advocacy efforts or supporting shelters for victims, your voice and actions matter. And each one can ripple out with far-reaching impacts in the kingdom of God.
Reflection Question
- Where can I be a voice for the vulnerable in my own life? How can I show God’s justice and mercy?
A Moment to Reflect
Ask God to give you eyes to see the hurting around you, and the courage to do something about it. Pray this with expectancy, that He will guide you into moments of action.
Prayer
Lord, today I lift up the women who are suffering in silence, living under the heavy yoke of violence and fear. Protect them and bring them to safety. Empower me to be a true reflection of Your grace and justice to those who need it. Use me, even in the small ways, to be an advocate and a voice for the voiceless. Help me to act with mercy and walk humbly in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
