Today, 29th October 2024, is International Internet Day, celebrating the first electronic message sent across the internet in 1969. Imagine trying to explain that to someone in biblical times! The internet has changed everything, from how we work to how we communicate, even how we share the gospel. In fact, it’s hard to picture life without it now—whether it’s the helpful how-tos, online church services, or that one Facebook group you follow for some Christian encouragement.
While the internet can be a marvellous tool for connection, let’s not forget that the most profound connection we can make doesn’t require WiFi or mobile data—it’s our connection with God.
A Spiritual Network
In John 15:5 Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” The internet is great for keeping us connected to each other, but the connection that matters most is our connection to Jesus. Without Him, we can’t bear fruit. Think of Him as the ultimate “network,” and unlike our patchy mobile service or broadband, His connection never drops.
Just like with the internet, we need to stay connected to access the benefits. No one ever opens a browser and then switches off the internet mid-search. Likewise, to thrive spiritually, we need to remain in God—connected to His Word, aligned with His Spirit, and continually in communication through prayer.
Sharing the Good News Online
The internet gives us unprecedented opportunities to share the gospel. When Paul wrote letters to the early church, he couldn’t have imagined the speed with which we can now send out messages of encouragement, prayers, and scriptures. Websites, social media, and online sermons can reach people in places where they may never hear the gospel otherwise. Romans 10:14 challenges us, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?”
Whether it’s a heartfelt message to a friend or sharing a Bible verse on social media, we can be digital missionaries, using technology to spread the good news of Christ.
Reflection Question and Action Step:
- Reflection Question: Are you using the tools at your disposal, like the internet, to deepen your faith and share the gospel?
- Action Step: This week, make a conscious effort to share something online that speaks of God’s love. It could be a scripture, a prayer, or a testimony of how God has moved in your life.
Stay Rooted in God’s Word
The internet is full of distractions—endless scrolling, countless notifications, and more YouTube videos than anyone could ever watch in a lifetime. Ephesians 5:16 warns us to “make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” While it’s easy to get sidetracked, it’s essential to stay rooted in God’s Word. Let’s ensure that we’re not just consuming content but also seeking spiritual nourishment, whether through online sermons, podcasts, or simply reading the Bible.
International Internet Day is a great reminder that connection is key—whether that’s staying connected to the people around us or staying spiritually connected to God.
A Moment to Reflect
Today, as we celebrate International Internet Day, think about your own spiritual connections. How are you using the internet to glorify God? Are there ways you could use your online presence to bless others or draw nearer to Him? As you scroll, remember that true connection starts with Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of technology and the ways it allows us to stay connected to each other and to You. Help us to use the internet wisely, to spread Your love, and to encourage others in their faith. Remind us daily that our most important connection is to You, and give us the wisdom to stay rooted in Your Word. Guide us as we navigate this digital world, always seeking Your will in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
