Walking in the Light of Christ

Today, Friday 11th October 2024, is a special day, as we reflect on International Day of the Girl Child. This global observance highlights the importance of empowering girls and recognising their rights and potential. While it’s a day that brings attention to issues such as education, healthcare, and equality, it’s also an opportunity for us as Christians to reflect on how God values every individual, regardless of gender, and calls us to walk in the light of Christ.

Empowerment Through Christ

The Bible is filled with examples of how God values women and girls. From Esther, whose courage saved her people, to Mary, who carried the Saviour of the world, God has always called women into roles of great purpose. In the same way, International Day of the Girl Child reminds us of the significance of nurturing the potential within every young girl today.

But beyond the societal implications, there’s something deeper at play. Galatians 3:28 reminds us, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This powerful verse speaks to the unity and value we all share in Christ, regardless of our backgrounds, roles, or gender. In God’s eyes, we are all loved, cherished, and empowered to fulfil His purpose.

Walking in the Light

On this day, we’re reminded of the words in John 8:12, where Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Whether we’re navigating life as young girls, women, or as those called to encourage and support them, this light is crucial. It gives us the courage to rise above societal challenges and step confidently into our God-given identity.

The world often tells us that value is found in appearance, status, or success, but the Bible paints a different picture. Our true worth is found in Christ alone. When we walk in His light, we are filled with a confidence that surpasses the fleeting standards of the world. It’s a confidence rooted in the fact that God’s plans for us are good, that He has called us by name, and that He sees each one of us as fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

Reflection Verse

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14

As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His light in all areas of life. Today, as we think about the challenges faced by girls around the world, we’re reminded of the impact we can have. We are not called to stand by idly; we are called to shine brightly, to speak up, to lift up, and to reflect the love and grace of Christ to those who may need it the most.

A Moment to Reflect with Encouraging Action

What can you do today to help others recognise their God-given value and potential, especially those who may feel overlooked or undervalued?

Action Step:
Consider reaching out to encourage someone who might be struggling with their sense of worth. Whether it’s a young girl in your community or someone facing a challenge, let them know they are seen, loved, and valued in God’s eyes. Pray for them and speak life over their future.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder today of how You value each and every one of us. Help us to walk in Your light and to see others as You see them—fearfully and wonderfully made, full of potential and purpose. May we be voices of encouragement and empowerment to those who need it, especially the girls and women in our lives. Give us the courage to reflect Your love and grace in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
