Finding God’s Peace in the Storm

Good morning, friends! Today, on Saturday 21st September 2024, we celebrate the International Day of Peace. It’s a day where we take time to reflect on peace in our world—but more importantly, in our hearts. The world is filled with conflict, uncertainty, and division, and sometimes it feels like we’re living right in the middle of the storm. So, what does peace really look like when we’re surrounded by chaos?

As Christians, we know that true peace doesn’t come from the world; it comes from God. Philippians 4:7 reminds us of this beautiful truth: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The peace of God isn’t something that always makes sense. In fact, it often doesn’t make sense! How can you be calm when the world is crumbling around you? How can you trust when everything feels uncertain?

The truth is, God’s peace is not tied to our circumstances. The peace that the world offers is fragile and temporary. It’s based on whether everything is going well, whether you’ve achieved all your goals, or whether the sun is shining. But God’s peace is different. It’s deep, steady, and it transcends what we can see or understand.

Jesus in the Storm

I love the story in Mark 4:35-41 where Jesus calms the storm. The disciples are panicking (understandably!), but Jesus is sleeping through the chaos. When they wake Him, He doesn’t share their panic. Instead, He speaks peace over the storm: “Quiet! Be still!” (v. 39). The wind dies down, and the sea becomes completely calm.

Here’s the key point: Jesus had peace in the storm before He brought peace to the storm. His peace wasn’t dependent on the external circumstances but was rooted in His relationship with the Father. If you feel like the waves of life are about to crash over you, remember that Jesus is with you in the boat. He might not always calm the storm right away, but He will bring peace to your heart if you trust Him.

A Moment to Reflect

Are there areas in your life where you need God’s peace today? Maybe it’s a difficult relationship, financial uncertainty, or something you’re anxious about. Instead of focusing on the chaos, focus on Jesus, the One who has the power to speak peace into any situation.

Reflection Verse

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”John 14:27

Reflection Question with an Action Step

Where do you need God’s peace most today? Take a moment to reflect on the storms in your life. Then, bring them to Jesus in prayer, trusting that His peace is not based on your circumstances. Find a quiet space, breathe deeply, and ask God to fill your heart with His peace today. Whether or not the storm passes, God’s peace will remain.

Encouraging Action

Today, commit to being a person of peace, both within yourself and with others. Is there a situation where you need to extend forgiveness or show kindness? As we celebrate the International Day of Peace, let’s remember that peace begins with us. Take a step towards bringing peace to a situation, whether that’s offering a kind word or simply letting go of anger.
